Waterproofing and Basement Conversion

Once you have decided to undertake an underpinning project to lower your basement you have to take into consideration waterproofing your foundation and ensuring appropriate household drainage. The City Wide Group has a solid reputation for using the highest level of safety and building methodologies on all its underpinning Toronto structural construction projects. We do it right the first time following all the best practices and using all the best materials of today’s structural technology. Each underpinning is a custom installation but each has common elements. Two of the essential components of all successful underpinning projects and foundation renovations are waterproofing and household drainage.

Waterproofing when Underpinning

Whenever the foundation of your home is disrupted or altered in any way, the waterproofing systems are also compromised. Changes have to be made to the waterproofing systems along with the underpinning to enhance the life of the useable, dry space. New waterproofing installations are a key part of every foundation underpinning project. The City Wide Group installs an internal waterproofing system consisting of a 4" weeping tile system tied into sump pump around the perimeter of the foundation to establish continuity and bleeding in foundation. A drainage mat (Delta MS membrane) is then installed around the foundation walls covering the existing foundation and underpinning pockets and draped over the weeping tiles and the gravel bed. If required, sump pumps and back flow valves complete the work to ensure that your new basement is high and dry. The possibility of moisture or vapor transmission through the new concrete floor can also be addressed by installing special drainage subfloors to receive new finish flooring.

Drainage and Digging out the Basement

Your home’s existing waste drainage system is a fundamental consideration when underpinning your foundation. The City Wide Group is expert and qualified to renovate your drain system. Underpinning is usually conducted in older homes which allows for the replacement or upgrading of outdated household plumbing, electrical and insulation systems. Sump pumps, back flow valves, sewage and plumbing rough-ins for future connections are frequently included as elements of the project. Now is the time to correct and improve drainage and plumbing issues by underpinning your Toronto home. Call the City Wide Group today.
